Although most people go to Machu Picchu by train or bus, what attracted me more was the possibility of hiking through the Andes to Machu Picchu. Instead of trekking the Inca trail I decided to hike the Salkantay trek. The Salkantay trek is a less trekked (although recently increasing in popularity) trail taking one through Salkantay pass at 4600 m altitude. The trail is well marked so one can hike it independently. However, since this was my first camping trip abroad, and it was rainy season, I decided to book a guide through the local hostel. It took me 3 days of trekking through jungle and mountains to finally reach Machu Picchu on Christmas eve.
